Nigeria, located in West Africa, shares borders with Benin to the west, Niger to the north, Chad to the northeast, and Cameroon to the east. It boasts a coastline along the Gulf of Guinea in the south. As of 2022, Nigeria’s population was estimated at over 225 million, making it the most populous country in Africa. The nation is characterized by a diverse mix of ethnic groups, with the Hausa, Yoruba, and Igbo being the largest.
Despite its rich natural resources, including petroleum and natural gas, Nigeria faces significant challenges. The country has a high population growth rate and a substantial portion of its population lives in poverty. Additionally, Nigeria contends with security issues, particularly in the northeastern region, where insurgent groups have been active. These factors contribute to a complex socio-economic landscape, necessitating focused development and humanitarian efforts.
RET is proud to have launched operations in Nigeria in 2024 and is committed to improving the lives of vulnerable youth and women by providing access to education, skills training, and economic opportunities. Through our initiatives, we aim to:
-
Enhance employability and reduce dependency on aid;
-
Strengthen financial independence;
-
Promote food security, and
-
Foster social cohesion in local communities.
To help young people and women gain meaningful employment, we’re providing technical skills training, small business management courses, and access to internships. We’re also partnering with local businesses and vocational centers to improve training quality and offer financial support for start-ups. Over 1,000 individuals will benefit from these programs, with many going on to establish small businesses or secure stable employment.
To support climate-sensitive agricultural and livestock training programs, we’re equipping participants with knowledge to improve crop yields and food security. We’ll also assist in establishing cooperatives, enabling farmers to market their products effectively and increase financial stability. More than 2,000 individuals will gain access to these opportunities, leading to improved resilience against climate-related challenges.
To promote peace and social harmony, RET provides life skills training, empowerment programs, and conflict mediation initiatives. Community members engage in workshops, mediation sessions, and collaborative peace projects, reducing tensions and strengthening relationships. By involving various actors, including women, youth, and people with disabilities, we aim to build resilient communities that can be self-sustaining.
